Ramadan 3 - The Merciful (The attribute of Mercy)

Translated by Dr. Faheem Bukhatwa

In the name of Allah most Gracious most Merciful.

Thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Peace and prayers be upon the most honorable of all messengers Mohammad; and all his folks, companions, and followers to the day they are all summoned together.

We are living through the month of Ramadan. The month about which prophet Muhammad (PPBU) said: it’s start is mercy, it’s middle is forgiveness and its end is (freedom from) or pardon from hell fire.

The most gracious the most merciful are two of Allah’s names. Mercy is one of his attributes. A true attribute which suits him perfectly. It is an attribute of a perfectionist which just like his other attributes is very fitting for his majesty. About the attribute of Merciful, and it’s effects on his servants Allah said:

((He is the all forgiving the all merciful))

((Allah is the kind and merciful with people))

((He forgives whom he whishes and he punishes whom he wishes, for Allah is the all forgiving the most merciful))

((for those who repent after a transgression, and do some good deed, Allah forgives, Allah is the all forgiving the most merciful))

((Ask your god for forgiveness and then repent to him. For my God is merciful and loving))

When a storm blows at sea, people in a ship call Allah. When disaster strikes the stricken injured calls Allah. When all attempts fail and there is nothing else can be done and all hopes are lost and all ties are cut they call Allah. He is the King, he is the Guardian the most merciful. May he be exalted and glorified.

Brothers, the mercy of Allah is close to those who do well. He is Allah, no other gods but him, he is the all-Compassionate the all-merciful. Allah Says ((My mercy has included all things)). Every thing indicates Allah’s mercy. This sky kept with no columns, who elevated it. Who flattened and tamed earth? Who made the sick recover? Who leads the blind’s steps? Who looks after the infant in three levels of darkness?
Who gives the snake life when poison fills its head?

Who sweetens honey?

Who filters out milk from between blood and excrements?

Who blows water through rocks?

The night, who perfected its darkness? And who unveils the morning?

Who breaks the powerful transgressor?

Who supports the one who is wrongly transgressed against?

Who answers the needy?

Who comes to the cries of help?

Who guides the misguided?

The lost, who shows him the way?

The one with no clothes, who clothes him?

Who feeds the hungry?

Who heals the injured?

Who frees the captured?

Who sets the poor rich?

You yourself, the slave of Allah, who created you? Who gave you your look? Who cracked your sight and hearing? Who fixed and perfected you? Who gave you sustenance? Who fed you? Who gave you refuge and supported you? Who guided you?

It is Allah, , no other gods but him, he covers all things with mercy and knows all.

Allah spread his mercy amongst his servants. The prophet (PPBU) said ((Allah made mercy into one hundred parts. He held on to 99 parts and descendent upon earth one part. All creatures share that 1% to be merciful. So as a mother horse gently tabs its newly born with its hoof so it wouldn’t hurt it)).

Omar ben al-Khattab said ((A group of captured people after a battle were brought by the prophet (PPBU). Among them there was a woman who was squeezing her milk to feed her missing baby. When she found him, she hugged him, held him close to her body and breast fed him. The prophet (PPBU) then said: “Could you imagine this mother throwing her baby into a fire?”. we said No, not if she can help it. He said “Allah is more merciful with his servants than this mother with her son” ))

The prophet (PPBU) said: “If believers knew how much punishment Allah has, they would think no one will ever be getting into paradise. And if unbelievers knew how much mercy Allah has, nobody would ever give up hope of entering paradise”

The largest of his attributes is his mercy. And the largest of his creations is his throne. When he took his throne He wrote in a book kept he keeps at the throne. He wrote that he takes upon himself that his mercy will win over his anger. He says: “Say, yee my servants who over done it upon them selves, Do not give up on the mercy of Allah. For Allah forgives all sins. He is the all forgiver the all merciful”

With his mercy he sent his messengers, he descended the books, he made things easy for his servants and sent into them Mohammed (PPBU). Allay says: ((With which mercy from Allah you became so soft with them)). He taught us after ignorance and guided us after being astray. With his mercy he made us aware of his names, attributes, and actions what made us aware that his is our master God.

Allah said through the voice of his prophet (PPBU) that every night at the last one-third part of the night Allah descends to the nearest sky and says: “I am the king I am the king. Is there any one asking for forgiveness? Is there any one repenting? Any one is in need and is asking? Any callers?, Up until dawn breaks”. Yet people are asleep, sinners are asleep, those who disobey are asleep. It is them who need Allah and they are asleep. And it is Him who needs none of them, yet he calls them looking for some one who needs forgiveness to forgive. What a great mercy.

Who gives as Allah does? And who blesses as he does? And who forgives sins as he does?. Oh, what a loss to those who run away from Allah, and those who refuse his calls. All this fills the believer’s soul with a good feeling towards Allah’s mercy. It gives solidity, patience, hope and expectation which makes a believer feels humble towards Allah.
